First of all let me say that everyone had a wonderful first day. I am so impressed with the great manners and wonderful listeners we have this year. Please look in your child’s message bag tonight. The children have no homework, but I’m afraid you have a little paper work to do. J
Today we read this touching story about the first day of school. Your child will be taking home a craft that they made, to go with this story.
Here is a link so that you can share this story at home tonight... enjoy!

Important Field Trip Note…
If the weather is unfavorable in the morning there will be an announcement on Ocean 100.1. Even if it is not sunny we will still try to go as our rain date forecast sounds worse. If we cancel the trip tomorrow we will come to school for a regular day. If we do go ahead with the trip we suggest packing lots of warm clothing. Lets’ all cross our fingers for sun! J

Field Trip reminder – We will be heading out on our year end field trip next Tuesday. Please send in permission slip and $4.00 fee as soon as possible if you have not already done so. We will not be going swimming but may get wet when playing on the beach. Please send a change of clothing just in case. A water bottle would also be needed and we can refill them as needed.
Hop – A – Thon – We will be having a school wide hop – a – thon on Wednesday, June 15th in the afternoon. The hop is to raise money for children with Muscular Dystrophy. If you wish to support this worth while cause, please send in a donation in your child’s message bag, marked “HOP”. ~Thank you! ~

Homework - The children were so upset when we told them that homework was done for the year that we have decided to continue for a few more weeks with the reading component. In your child’s message bag today, you will find their reading log sheets as well as some guided readers. Please read them with your child and sign the log sheet. We will change the book once a week.
Sight words – In kindergarten we have about 25 words (3 lists) that we work with on a regular basses. In kindergarten we want to expose them to as much print as we can. This said there is no expectation that they know certain about of words before leaving kindergarten; however, every bit helps. We will be sending home a larger list of words and if over the next few weeks or the summer you would like to work with these words feel more than free to do so. We are overwhelmed with the amount of home support we had this year, give your self a pat on the back for a job well done! J
Book Orders – The present book order is being shipped and should be here any day. The last book order will be sent home by June 3rd and will need to be back by June 10th, to ensure it will come back by the end of the year. No late orders please. L We would like to thank you for supporting the book order program. We were able to get many great books and resources to support you child’s learning this year. THANK YOU!
Shoes with laces – Some of the children are wearing shoes with laces but do not know how to tie. If this is the case please send other footwear for your child as they get frustrated when they need to wait for someone to tie their shoes.
Year End Trip – We have booked our year end trip. We will be going to Cabot Park to enjoy the beach, park and children’s centre. The date booked is June 21st, leaving the school at 9:00 am. and returning at the end of the day for bus dismissal. A permission slip and information sheet will come home next week.
As always if you have any questions please feel free to contact us. J

The Results on our Class Election!
Today we had our own election in class today. Our results are in …
Wayne Easter - 14 votes
Peter Beven-Baker – 4 votes
Rita Jackson – 3 votes
Tim Oglivie – 2
Students’ reasons for why they voted for who they did…
- Because he will win.
- Because my Mom/Dad/Aunt voted for him.
- Because he’s the best.
- Because my mom said she wouldn’t vote for the other ones.
- Because I like her style.
- Because her last name is Jackson.
- Because he’s my dentist.
- Because he has a nice smile.
HAPPY ELECTION DAY!

Cookie Sale for Easter seals
The grade 5 and 6 classes will be having a cookie sale tomorrow. The proceeds will go towards Easter Seals. The cookies are .25 cents each. We will let the children have one cookie during class time. If you wish to buy more cookies please send in a bag and we will send extra cookies home with them. If you would like to just make a donation, please just send a note along with bag of money.
Field Trip
Please check your child’s homework binder for information about our upcoming field trip. Please sign and return permission slips with $5.00 as soon as possible.
Token sales
Please try to send exact change when buying tokens. We do our token sales here in the classroom and things go much faster if we have exact change. You may also send a cheque payable to Central Queens Elementary School.
Sight words
Just a reminder that the children have list of sight words inside the cover of their homework binder. You may want to use these words at home to play games with or point out to your child, when you are reading together. We have about 27 words that we work with on a daily basis here in kindergarten. They are known as “Fish pond words”. When you child knows the first list of 9 words, please send in a note and we will give you the next list. When your child knows all 27 kindergarten words there is a bigger list of sight words that we can send home. Please remember that there is NO expectation that your child know these words this year. We just see this as the next step, if they have a good grasp on letter and sound reorganization. When you child knows the 3 list of kindergarten words, they can receive a certificate for their hard work. Remember that working with words should be fun and never a job at this age.
Repot cards
Please send in your child’s signed report card when you are done looking at it. If you have any questions now or at anytime during the remainder of the year, please give us a call.
~Thank you~

April News 2011
This week in kindergarten we have been talking about spring and Easter. We have been busy looking for signs of spring. Yesterday we read the book “The rescue of Nanoose” a true story of a whale rescue that took place in B.C. We will be working on retelling this story by drawing pictures of the beginning, middle and end of the story. Ask your child to tell you the story of Nanoose.
